A Brief Look at Presidents and Endangered Species
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2008-08-27

Back in 2006, I did a little post about Presidents and their work to save endangered species. Given that President Bush is attacking the Endangered Species Act, I thought a re-do would be a in order.

The first set of endangered species were protected in 1967 under President Lyndon Johnson. Then, in 1973, President Nixon proposed updating the Act to protect more species.

So, here's the breakdown :
Johnson - 73 listed (36.5/yr)
Nixon - 59 listed (9.8/yr)
Ford - 42 listed (21/yr)
Carter - 112 listed (28/yr)
Reagan - 296 (37/yr)
Bush - 235 listed (58.8/yr)
Clinton - 524 listed (65.5/yr)
Bush - 61 (7.6/year)

If that's too complex, here's a little chart :

To put this in perspective, in 5 different years as president, Clinton protected more species than Bush has in eight years. Similarly, the first Bush protected more in both 1991 and 1992 than Bush has in his total presidency.

Just throwin' this out there, but since Bush doesn't USE the Endangered Species Act, why on earth is he trying to change it?

Crazy.
