Bush Pulls a Lucy Van Pelt
Posted by Dan Stafford on 2008-09-18

I'm not sure if I'm crying so hard I'm laughing, or vice versa, but today the Bush Administration blasted House Democrats for their energy bill. You know, the one that included offshore drilling.

The 'crack me up' part is that for months, Bush, McCain, Palin, et. al. have been houdning the Dems to allow some more offshore drilling. They chanted 'Drill, Baby, Drill!' They've harrassed and harangued the Dems to let their oil buddies drill. They've lied to the public about the impact drilling would have. And when they get what they want - a Dem sponsored drilling bill, they cry, 'it's not good enough!'

The 'make me cry' part is that, just like Charlie Brown running at the football, the House Dems fell for it. They did the political calculus, and thought they'd come out heroes, and this would help put the election in the bag. But, it turns out, the Republicans just wanted to push the Dems into a corner, no matter what.

So where are we now? Well the Dems were willing to sell out on drilling, and everyone knows it, and R's are still able to claim the D's are holding things up.

All I'm saying is, if the Dems were going to known as the hold things up party, they could've at least kept their principles and values intact while they did it.

Drilling has always been a red herring, and I'm sad the House Dems made a jump at it thinking it would be an electorally smart move.
