Imagine no more Pipelines
Remember that time we blocked the expansion of dirty tar sands oil (so far) by uniting a big coalition of cowboys, Indians and environmental activists to block the Keystone XL oil pipeline? Well there’s another massive extreme energy expansion going on that you haven’t heard as much about: The Fracked Gas Circus.
There’s a massive fracked gas drilling boom going on in the U.S. right now. And just like the Koch brothers and other Tar Sands backers needed Keystone XL to move their dirty fuel to to foreign markets, the frackers also need a new generation of pipelines, export terminals and other infrastructure. And just like with KXL, local residents, Native Americans and environmentalists are fighting right now to block fracked gas infrastructure from Georgia to Oregon.
But unlike KXL, these pipelines and export terminals are all in the U.S., so they don’t need special approval from the State Department or President Obama. In fact, most of these projects are rubber-stamped by an agency almost nobody has heard of — the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). And get this, their funding is contingent on how many fracked gas permits they approve.
That’s why we’re going back to FERC May 21-29 with a coalition of front line communities and activists called Beyond Extreme Energy. This action has already been endorsed by leaders like Robert Kennedy Jr., Naomi Klein, Mark Ruffalo and Rev. Yearwood. Together, we’re demanding a moratorium on new fracked gas infrastructure, and a fundamental re-shaping of our energy priorities to focus on the solutions we need, not the fossil fuels that are killing us. Can you chip in to support this important action?
- $5 houses one frontline leader for a night at a local church;
- $36 feeds one participant a healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner for the entire week of action;
- $100 Covers the cost of one participant for a week – training, housing, food and travel costs.
Why FERC? Robert Kennedy, Jr. has called them “a rogue agency, a captive agency.” FERC is the agency that approved the Cove Point fracked gas facility, and has plans to approve other facilities like it from Jordan Cove, Ore., to Cameron Parish, La. They’re also the agency that’s approving massive new pipelines in Virginia, Massachusetts, New York, Washington and California.
At this time of crisis, we need a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission that does what is right, not a weak body whose funding comes from fees paid by the gas industry and other fossil fuel companies they “regulate.” But to shine a light on this “FERCus” and the damage it’s doing to our planet, all of us need to take action to stop disastrous fossil fuel expansion.
Imagine no more pipelines, no more export terminals: In short, no way for the Frackers to move their poisonous product to market. The fracking industry would dry up, and our leaders would be forced to consider safer, saner alternatives like wind and solar power. And why not? Much of this fracked gas is headed for export to Europe and Asia anyway, where it will enrich big corporations, destroy the climate, and do NOTHING for domestic energy security or economic development.
But right now, not enough people know this story. We need to bring it to them in a big, bold way that shows that we will not be silent. A way that stands with leaders from Mark Ruffalo and Naomi Klein to the front line activists battling a pipeline in their backyard. We need a way to move Beyond Extreme Energy, and we can’t do it without you. Will you chip in $5, $36, or $100 to make it happen?
