Our date with Schmucker’s

Our date with Schmucker’s

On Saturday, we had a fun date with Smucker's (but maybe not so fun for them.) Tons of Environmental Action members showed up in their grocery stores, put signs in front of the Smucker's jams, and told the store managers they wanted GMOs labeled in their products. Check out the photo below of one member in Seattle, Washington, where Smucker's and other food giants spent millions to defeat a populat GMO labeling initiative last fall.

At the same time, a dozen local activists and college students headed over to Smucker's international headquarters in Orville, OH to hand deliver over 35,000 petition signatures.  Within seconds of showing up at Smucker's headquarters, six security guards asked that we hand over the petition signatures at the entrance and not enter the premises. Evidently, not only did CEO Richard Smucker not want to meet in person, he didn't want us anywhere near his picturesque factory! But the good news is, those Security guards knew we were coming, which means they know about our campaign – and were worried enough about what we might say and do to send a detail of security to deal with us.

Richard Smucker, still hasn't met with us, but we know he's been feeling the pressure today. Dozens of grocery store owners will call to pass on that their customers want GMOs labeled and several prominent food bloggers, reaching an audience that can influence Smucker's brand, are covering our story later this week.  We'll post the news hits on our Facebook Page as they are published so you can check them out.

What's next?
First, until Smucker's decides to label GMO in its products and stop blocking GMO labeling, we're only going to refer to them as Schmucker's.

Glad we got that covered.

Second, one of our volunteer leaders, Rita Frost, is a senior at the College of Wooster, which is just a few miles away from Smucker's headquarters. Because of Wooster College's proximity to Smucker's, the cafeteria is stocked full of Smucker's products. Rita is really fired up to get Smucker's products labeled and has been working around the clock to put together our actions at Smucker's headquarters.

Next week, Rita will lead an exciting action that will continue to escalate the pressure on Smucker's.  Stay tuned to participate in a rapid response to support our action on the ground in Orville.
