We’re Winning! #Smuckers
After 3 weeks of silence from Smucker's, on Friday we got their attention. Hundreds of Environmental Action activists jammed Smucker's phone lines for hours — demanding that CEO Richard Smucker stop blocking GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) labeling.
Prior to our call in day, Richard Smucker had refused to respond to our 20,000+ petition signatures and had no official policy regarding GMO labeling. Early on Friday, after dozens of phone calls, Smucker's responded to our callers that "they now support federal GMO labeling, but are against state labeling laws" — clearly not the response we want, but we have Smucker's attention and are getting close.
Smucker's is starting to worry and with good reason. In 2012, Dole and Mars faced an enormous public backlash for opposing California's GMO labeling initiative and pledged to not spend money opposing GMO labeling.
In the coming weeks, we'll be ramping up our campaign to stop Smucker's from blocking GMO labeling. If Smucker’s backs out of opposing GMO labeling initiatives, dozens of other companies like Campbell’s Soup, Hershey’s, and Coke, could follow suit.
