Add your name: Hellbenders require endangered species protections

Re: Docket No. FWS-R3-ES-2024-0152

Eastern hellbenders have inhabited the rivers and streams of the Appalachians and Ozarks for millions of years, but human-caused pollution has severely impacted these unique amphibians.

Fewer than 60% of the historically documented eastern hellbender populations remain, with the majority in decline. Sedimentation has clogged our waterways, turning once clear rivers into hostile environments for the hellbenders that have called them home for generations.

Endangered Species Act protections will help secure funding to clean and shield rivers from runoff from farms, logging, and construction projects. Not only will these protections help revitalize hellbenders, they will improve the entire ecosystem, and the health of humans living nearby.

We support listing eastern hellbenders as endangered species.
