Mexican gray wolves, or lobos, were nearly decimated in the 1970s, when their population was reduced to less than two dozen wolves.

Though conservation efforts have helped lobos recover from the brink of extinction, these wolves are still vulnerable, with only an estimated 241 left in the wild.
