We’re drowning in plastic — Amazon could help change this
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy,
Every year, more than 1 million sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals die from exposure to plastic. And yet we continue producing more single-use plastic, much of which is doomed to end up in our oceans.
In 2022 alone, an estimated 22 million pounds of Amazon’s global plastic packaging ended up in the world’s waterways and seas. This is unacceptable, and it doesn’t have to be this way. Amazon has already significantly reduced its plastic packaging in other countries, now it’s time to bring these innovations to North America.
As the world’s largest online retailer, Amazon could become a leader in plastic-free packaging. But until this happens, whales will continue starving with stomachs full of plastic and sea turtles will continue choking on plastic envelopes.
For the sake of our marine life and our entire planet, we are calling on Amazon to stop using plastic packaging.
